The word ‘Bandhav-Garh’ translates to ‘the Brother’s Fort’. The historical links of Bandhavgarh starts here. Tales from the epic Mahabharata depicts about Mythological hero Rama believed to have gifted his devoted brother (Bandhav) Laxmana on his return from victory over Lanka(Ceylon, Srilanka). The forest around Bandhavgarh had long been maintained as a Shikargarh (game reserve) of the maharajas of Rewa and their guests. With a rich historical past, rich biodiversity, the Tiger reserve under Project Tiger since 1972 (WPA of 1972), has wide varieties of flora and fauna. The 12 natural waterholes feed the abundant wildlife and the people living on the forest edges, and with Tiger conservation, the park now is known for the world’s highest density of Bengal Tigers. Several other historical monuments, remains of the 2000-year-old caves, statue of Shesh-saiya, Bandhavgarh is known for its culture and nothing prepares you for an unfiltered encounter than finding the tigers and other animals open in wild. It is thoroughly an over whelming privilege to be able to travel to this small village of Umaria in the state of Madhya Pradesh steeping through the history, perfectly blended wildlife and culture experience.
We drove a short distance where we met the trackers who were waiting for us on the edge of the forest, entrance of the National Par. There are three main zones of the National Park – Tala, Magdhi, Khitauli. The mixed vegetation of Sal and savannahs, broken terrain, rocky hill ranges, grassy swamps and forest valley; there is nothing magical than spotting a tiger or a leopard in the landscape. Being able to see the entire wild animals in their natural habitat, specific safaris that will appeal to any wildlife enthusiasts can be included in their itineraries and certainly it will be an experience which remains with you forever.
